Rhythmic karst springs

چکیده
Rhythmic springs (ebb and flow springs, intermittent springs, potajnice) belong to the group of springs which appear exclusively in karstified terrains. The paper describes various types of rhythmic springs and gives their classification. It also develops a mathematical model for the functioning of this type of springs based on the principle of recharge and emptying of the underground reservoir through siphon action. Applying this model, according to the observed hydrographs of some rythmic springs in Yugoslavia, the paper explains in detail the structure of the underground reservoir located in the karst.

Modeling of karst and alluvial springs discharge in the central Alborz highlands and on the Caspian southern coasts
Springs are the important water resources, which thier study is necessary in terms of their management and exploitation. In northern Iran, the karst springs locate in the central Alborz highlands and alluvial springs on the Caspian southern coasts. The Karst and alluvial springs discharge is variable because of different conditions in terms of aquifer, topography and precipitation .This study ha...
متن کاملHYDROCHEMISTRY OF KARST SPRINGS FROM TWO CARBONATIC UNITS IN ZAGROSIDES OF IRAN
One hundred and nineteen karst springs, all with electrical conductivity of less than 500 gmhosfcm, discharging two carbonatic aquifers in Zagrosides of Iran are chosen and studied. The results indicate that the lithology of each unit is well reflected in the chemistry of the springs and the overall mineralogical composition of the aquifer can successfully be reconstructed from the hydroche...
متن کاملAnalysis of karst aquifer spring flows with a gray system decomposition model.
There are approximately 470,000 km(2) of karst aquifers that feed many large springs in North China. Turbulent flow often exists in these karst aquifers, which means that the classical ground water model based on Darcy's law cannot be applied here. Ground water data are rare for these aquifers. As a consequence, it is difficult to quantitatively investigate ground water flow in these karst syst...
متن کاملSimulation of spring flows from a karst aquifer with an artificial neural network
In China, 9Ð5% of the landmass is karst terrain and of that 47,000 km2 is located in semiarid regions. In these regions the karst aquifers feed many large karst springs within basins of thousands of square kilometres. Spring discharges reflect the fluctuation of ground water level and variability of ground water storage in the basins. However, karst aquifers are highly heterogeneous and monitor...
متن کاملand Management
The term “karst” applies to a distinctive type of landscape that develops from the dissolving action of water on soluble bedrock (Figure 11.1)—primarily limestone and marble but also dolostone, gypsum and halite. Karst landscapes are characterized by fluted and pitted rock surfaces, shafts, sinkholes, sinking streams, springs, subsurface drainage systems, and caves. The unique features and thre...
